Fairmont grad Westbeld signs training camp contract with WNBA team

Fairmont High School product and recent national champion Kathryn Westbeld has signed a training camp contract with the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks.

Westbeld, a 6-foot-2 forward, recently wrapped up her collegiate career at Notre Dame. She helped lead the Irish to a national championship over Mississippi State on April 1 in Columbus.

Westbeld averaged 7.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game in her senior season, which included starts in 31 of 32 games. She shot 59.2 percent from the floor.

The 2014 Fairmont grad became the 39th member of Notre Dame’s 1,000-point club this season and finished her career with 1,076 points. During Westbeld’s career, Notre Dame was 82-9 with her in the starting lineup. She’s the seventh current Irish player on an WNBA roster.

The Sparks open the preseason May 7 at the Connecticut Sun.
