Denver Broncos coach Vance Joseph was a long-time defensive backs coach before he became a defensive coordinator and then a head coach, so it should come as no surprise that he took a good-natured shot at his star wide receivers on Monday.
When asked about the frustration of Broncos wide receivers Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, Joseph had some fun at their expense.
“Receivers? They’re always frustrated,” Joseph said according to Mike Klis of 9News in Denver. “They have to stay patient.”
After three straight seasons with both Thomas and Sanders going over 1,000 yards together, they’re on pace for 988 yards and 760 yards this season, respectively. Even worse, the pair combined for just 5 catches and 38 yards in a win on Sunday over the Oakland Raiders.
Fortunately, the Denver offensive line has been improved in their run blocking and the Broncos have been able to generate a very capable rushing attack. Through four weeks, they currently rank third in the NFL in total rushing (with the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins still yet to play).
The defense is also back to their dominant ways after struggling to stop the run a season ago. All totaled, even without a lot of explosiveness in the passing game, the Broncos are still winning games and Joseph is right.
Eventually, Thomas and Sanders will have opportunities to make bigger impacts for a team that is hoping to contend for another championship.
