The Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders are set to square off Sunday, pitting superstar pass rusher Von Miller against franchise quarterback Derek Carr.
That’s an epic matchup in its own right, but it is also a huge showdown for the division. The Broncos were third in the AFC West in 2016, passed by both the Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs. However, they haven’t forgotten that they won the West for five straight seasons before that, winning Super Bowl 50 to cap off their run of dominance.
On the other hand, the Raiders are the hot new team, desperately trying to win it all before leaving for Las Vegas. Carr, wide receiver Amari Cooper and pass rusher Khalil Mack want to prove once and for all that they’ve dethroned the Broncos. In the NFL’s toughest division, even these early games could define playoff positions, and both teams will come out swinging.

What you need to know
- Rebound games: Both teams are looking to rebound after 2-0 starts and Week 3 losses. The Broncos were coming off of a blowout win over the Dallas Cowboys, but they fell flat in losing to the Buffalo Bills, a fringe wild-card team, in Week 3. Meanwhile, the Raiders fell to another fringe wild-card team in the Washington Redskins last weekend. It’s possible that both AFC West clubs were already looking ahead to their game against each other and overlooked the games they had to get through. Either way, both should be fired up, knowing only one will be able to prove that Week 3 was a fluke.
- Carr’s test: This is a huge test for Carr, who got a huge new contract in the offseason and became, for a time, the highest-paid player in the NFL. The Raiders paid him that money to win this game. They’re sick of being at the bottom of the division and see Carr as the guy who can knock off the Broncos for good and return the Raiders to their glory days. The 10-point outing against the Redskins will quickly be forgotten if he can torch Denver.
- Mental mistakes: The Broncos have to prove they’re still on top of their game. They were clearly very focused and prepared in playing the Cowboys, in a game they were predicted to lose. They were not nearly as focused against the Bills. They failed on a fake punt. Von Miller helped sink them with a pointless penalty when he faked offering a hand to help Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor stand up. Whether that should have been a penalty isn’t even that important. It was called, and those types of mental errors can’t happen against the Raiders. The Broncos have far more offensive firepower than Buffalo.
