Broncos HC Vance Joseph comments on Brandon McManus’ struggles

The Denver Broncos are 3-1 and sitting pretty in the AFC currently, but not all things are peachy keen surrounding the team currently.

After the team’s 16-10 win over the rival Oakland Raiders in Week 4, one of the more hot-button topics was kicker Brandon McManus. The kicker, who signed an $11.25 million contract extension last month missed a kick that would have essentially iced the game for the Broncos but instead left their defense in a situation where they had to close out the game.

This was the third kick missed for McManus this season, all of which have come at home, and he’s connected on 7-of-10 on the year. But, as the Associated Press reported (via USA TODAY), Broncos head coach Vance Joseph isn’t overly concerned about his kicker.

“He has to make that kick,” coach Vance Joseph said Monday right after saying he wasn’t concerned about his scuffling kicker. “That kick would have been critical for us to be up by three scores and that game is basically put away. He understands that. He’s been told that.”

“Moving forward, I feel good about B-Mac. He’s a talent. I’m not down on him,” Joseph said. “Things happen from time to time. I haven’t changed my mind about how I feel about B-Mac. He’s fine.”

In the two years before this one, McManus had connected on over 85 percent of his kicks, never missing one shorter than 40 yards. This year, he’s already missed a kick under 30 and two kicks of 40-plus yards as well.
