Defense was considered to be the Achilles heel for the Pittsburgh Steelers this season. Through four games that doesn’t appear to be the case.
The Steelers are ranked No. 4 in the NFL in total defense. Pittsburgh only surrendered 9 points to the AFC North rival Baltimore Ravens. Opponents are averaging just 15 points against the Steelers. Defensive end Cam Heyward projects more good things to come for the emerging unit.
“The sky is the limit if we take care of our business. That means just coming to practice and doing the little things,” Heyward said, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. “We all have talent in this group. We have an abundance of it.”
The Steelers have shown improvement on the defensive end this season. Granted the team hasn’t faced an explosive offense. The Cleveland Browns, Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears and Baltimore Ravens don’t possess great offensive attacks.
Week 6 against the Kansas City Chiefs, who look like the best team in the NFL right now, should provide a good litmus test.
The Steelers have handled their business on defense versus the opponents on their schedule, with the exception of the lapse in Chicago. As the season wears on the team will be tested more on defense. Currently the small sample size is showing encouraging results.
