Commentary: RG3 just barely makes the cut

Whew, that was close.

Possible future Cleveland Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III was measured at the NFL Scouting Combine on Friday and found to stand 6 feet, 2-3/8 inches.

Turns out the Baylor University media guide, in a major upset, was telling the truth, even slighting RG3 by that all-important fraction.

Griffin’s height matters because NFL teams shy away from short quarterbacks and there had been rumors that Griffin might be closer to — horrors! — an even 6 feet, which might have worked against him even though that’s how tall New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is, and he threw for 5,476 yards last season.

So now the Browns or the Washington Redskins or some other quarterback-challenged franchise can proudly bundle draft picks and players and send them to the St. Louis Rams (who have a quarterback, Sam Bradford, who stands 6-foot-4) for the No. 2 overall pick in April’s draft and use it on Griffin, easily the most dynamic player available.

Seriously, if you’ve seen RG3 play — even just in highlights — and the team you root for is trotting out Colt McCoy (Browns) or Rex Grossman (Redskins) at the sport’s most important position, you should be staging an email campaign just in case your front office sees no benefit to adding this rare specimen who seems to be a mix of Michael Vick (6 feet) and Randall Cunningham (6, 4).

Browns coach Pat Shurmur tried to play it coy this week by saying McCoy (who stands 6, 2) works hard and still could be the guy. He said it with a straight face, but it was probably just to avoid sounding desperate.

Coaches, scouts and GMs like measureables, and now that Griffin’s are being revealed, you can bet Shurmur is probably the giddiest 4, 12 coach in NFL history over the possibilities that might lie ahead.
