Flashback to the 2014 NFL Draft. The Dallas Cowboys had two players at the top of their board when the then St. Louis Rams were on the clock at No. 13. Those two All-Pros will compete against each other on Sunday — Aaron Donald and Zack Martin.
The Rams selected Donald with the No. 13 pick and the Cowboys snagged Martin at No. 16. Dallas was very intrigued by Donald, although they are very satisfied three-time Pro Bowl guard.
“I just remember the talk was about those guys. Those were obviously two targeted guys in that draft. It felt like there was a no lose situation we ended up in,” offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said, via ESPN’s Todd Archer. “Either way we were going to be in great shape if someone took one of the other guys ahead of us. But they were great battles and obviously have proven that they were the cream of that crop in a lot of ways in that draft.”
Both Donald and Martin are two-time All-Pros and three-time Pro Bowl selections. The Rams and Cowboys did quite alright for themselves in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
Donald’s battle with Martin will be the game within the game in Sunday’s matchup. The Rams will move the defensive lineman around often versus the Cowboys. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott already expects Donald to give his team fits. It’s going to be intriguing to see who wins those one-on-one battles between Donald and Martin. Get your popcorn ready for the battle in the trenches.
