David Irving return puts these 3 Cowboys on chopping block

Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman David Irving returns from suspension on Tuesday and the franchise will have to make a corresponding roster move to stay at 53.

Inevitably, somebody will have to be cut to make room for Irving. While we don’t know who yet and likely won’t until Tuesday, a look at their roster leads you to some likely candidates.

Why the Dallas Cowboys could release Darren McFadden

This one is admittedly a longshot and his status on the chopping block could have everything to do with how court goes for Ezekiel Elliott on Monday. The anticipation is that the process could still take weeks before yielding a ruling, but in the event something of consequence happens on Monday that makes it certain that Elliott will be eligible to play this year, Darren McFadden could go.

He’s been a healthy scratch in all four games this season. So, while they’ll hold onto him if the threat of losing Elliott for six games this year looms, they could cut him if there’s some sort of resolution.

Why the Dallas Cowboys could release Kellen Moore

Again, unlikely, but the Cowboys could make a move on Kellen Moore to buy time similarly to how they used him when they had to cut down to 53. As a vested veteran, Moore doesn’t have to pass through waivers and could likely be brought back at a later date as their injury situation plays out.

Ultimately, it would buy them some time in the event that they’re simply unwilling to part with our final and most likely option.

Why the Dallas Cowboys could release Bene Benwikere

Even with injuries abound in their secondary, Benwikere has only played in two games and he hasn’t played a single defensive snap in those two games. With Chidobe Awuzie and Nolan Carroll returning from injury, there’d appear to be even less of a need for his services.

The Cowboys invested a conditional pick while acquiring him, so they’re actually incentivized to make sure he doesn’t get to those benchmarks to avoid giving up more for him. So this is likely a formality unless the coaching staff is insistent that, over time, he’ll be able to contribute in a big way.
