Eagles-Chargers, Week 4: Game time, TV channel, watch online (10/01/17)

The Philadelphia Eagles will be on the West Coast on Sunday to face an opponent they don’t play against very often, the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Eagles are trying to keep pace atop an extremely competitive NFC East. They are tied for first at 2-1 with the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys. However, the Cowboys are hosting the 2-1 Los Angeles Rams, and Washington is on the road against the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs.

While the Chargers are winless in 2017, that does not mean that they are a bad football team. Outside of their 24-10 Week 3 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, their other two games were decided by 3 points or less. They will be desperate on Sunday to avoid an 0-4 start to the season.

What you need to know

Series History: The Eagles and Chargers have only played against each other 11 times, with the Chargers holding a 7-4 lead. The last time they played was in September 2013, with the Chargers edging out a 33-30 victory. Quarterback Philip Rivers was spectacular in that game, going 36 of 47 for 419 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Eagles have not defeated the Chargers since a 20-17 victory during the 2005 season.

Eagles running backs: They came into the season with a strong three-man running back rotation with Darren Sproles, LeGarrette Blount and Wendell Smallwood. Sproles is done for the year with a torn left ACL and broken left forearm he sustained on the same play in Week 3. That leaves Blount and Smallwood to carry the load. Fantasy football experts believe that Smallwood will get the most work going forward, but the Eagles leading rusher is Blount. He has rushed for 118 yards on 26 carries and scored a touchdown.

Can the Chargers pull out a close win? Dating to the 2016 season, the Chargers have lost eight consecutive games. The 14-point loss to the Chiefs is their worst loss during that span, and five of games were decided by 7 points or less. That means a small number of plays are the difference between the Chargers being a contender and the team that is on its way to a third-consecutive season at the bottom of the AFC West.
