New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore has some interesting opinions about NFL officiating.
Gilmore received two questionable penalties during the Patriots 36-33 win against the Houston Texans. He disagreed with both of them, and seemed especially upset about the first one.
“Yeah, I was in a good spot,” Gilmore said, via Mass Live’s Kevin Duffy. “But refs, you know, they get worse and worse every year so you’ve got to not touch him.”
Those penalties likely aren’t the only thing frustrating Gilmore this season. The Patriots did something they don’t normally do to acquire him, pay big money for a free agent.
They signed him to a deal that guarantees him $40 million. That is a lot to live up to, and through three games, their pass defense doesn’t look like it has one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. It is currently ranked 17th in the NFL, giving up just under 241 yards per game.
It’s still early, and it’s not as if the Patriots have been on a losing streak. They’re 3-1, and in great position to again finish with the best record in the AFC.
However, if they plan on winning a second-consecutive Super Bowl, Gilmore will have to start performing the way the Patriots thought he would when they signed him.
