Denver Broncos tight end A.J. Derby got his team on the board first as they take on the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, and he did so with a highlight reel catch.

Lined up as a fullback, Derby was able to leak into the secondary largely unnoticed. A pass down the sideline from quarterback Trevor Siemian was hauled in one-handed and he was barely able to stop his momentum from carrying him out of bounds to cut into the end zone at the last moment.

The Broncos acquired Derby for a fifth-round pick last season from the New England Patriots and he made some plays for them down the stretch. He caught 16 passes for 160 yards in the final five games of the season.

Originally a sixth-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Arkansas product was buried on the depth chart behind Rob Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett, creating a surplus at tight end.

Now in his second season with the Broncos, he hasn’t been as prominent of a factor in the offense in 2017. Through three games, he had just 4 receptions for 39 yards entering the game.

However, he already has 2 catches for 51 yards and his first career touchdown catch. And, while he was always going to remember that first score no matter what, this one will be sure to live on in the highlight reels through at least the end of the weekend.
