Hamilton defeated Toledo Start 8-7 to capture the 1997 Division I state baseball championship

Hamilton set to honor 1997 state baseball champions Saturday

That Big Blue squad went 30-2 and pulling off a stunning 8-7 victory in the Division I state title game at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium in Canton, scoring five times in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Toledo Start.

“I’m not the most religious person in the world, but with the way the last couple weeks have gone, I’ve been looking up at the sky a lot,” HHS coach Dan Bowling said after the game. “These kids just wouldn’t be denied. They never stopped believing.”

Jay Davis scored the winning run and Curtus Moak picked up the mound victory in relief for Hamilton, USA Today’s No. 2 team in the country.

The HHS athletic department is hosting Saturday’s reception at 6 p.m. at Stang Field, with food and drink provided. The on-field recognition will begin at 6:45 p.m., with Big Blue facing Talawanda at 7 p.m.

If there’s bad weather, the reception will be held in the school cafeteria. If the game is cancelled, Hamilton will try to reschedule the event.
