LIBERTY TWP. — The Lakota East High School head football coaching position attracted 31 applicants.
Next up is the first round of interviews, which will begin on Wednesday, Dec. 9.
East athletic director Rich Bryant revealed on Monday, Dec. 7, the list of those who officially applied for the job, including the six candidates who will be interviewed.
“I think it’s an impressive list,” Bryant said. “You get a great mix of some established coaches, established coordinators, both high school and college coaches. It speaks to the opening that we have as one that people are interested in. It’s a tremendous opportunity for anybody.”
Those who will be interviewed are: Rick Haynes (Thomas More College assistant); Mike Buckenmyer (Kings offensive coordinator, East math teacher); Roy Thobe (Fairborn head coach, former Hamilton assistant); Carlton Gray (Lakota West defensive coordinator); Vic Whiting (Canal Fulton Northwest head coach) and Barry Wulf (Wilmington College head coach).
Haynes, Buckenmyer and Thobe will be interviewed on Wednesday, and Gray, Whiting and Wulf will go the next day.
“It’s one of the most difficult things I’ve had to do with such a large number of qualified applicants,” Bryant said of paring down the list to six.
The second round of interviews will begin next Thursday, Dec. 17. The goal is to name a new coach in early January.
On the interview committee for the first round are: Bryant, East principal Keith Kline, two parents, two students and two coaches.
The second-round committee will consist of Bryant, Kline, Lakota athletic director Stu Eversole and Lakota assistant superintendent Ron Spurlock.
