Second junior college ousts ex-Dunbar standout

Two strikes and he’s out? That’s the speculation in Memphis after basketball standout Geron Johnson (Dunbar) was thrown out of his second junior college in as many years this week for once again running afoul of the law.

Johnson, a sophomore at Garden City (Kan.) Community College, gave Memphis a verbal commitment on Feb. 8, but there’s talk now that head coach Josh Pastner won’t be taking delivery on the multi-talented 6-foot-3 shooting guard in light of recent developments.

The problems stem from the discovery of an iPhone. Literally the day after committing, Johnson allegedly found one on campus and made no attempt to turn it in.

According to the Garden City Telegram, two students reported the phone missing and the police were called. Johnson was cited on an allegation of misdemeanor theft of lost property.

Later, for allegedly making harassing comments toward a person involved in that incident, Johnson was cited for disorderly conduct, the Telegram reported.

Then, a few days after that, Johnson reportedly received a trespassing ticket after being found sleeping in a friend’s dorm room between classes; he apparently had lost student residential privileges following the theft citation.

In high school, Johnson was arrested for attempted burglary. A marijuana arrest and subsequent violation of his diversion program’s terms — he failed a drug test in jail — led to his downfall at Chipola (Fla.) College.

“I wish him the best,” Garden City coach Kris Baumann told CBSSports.com. “Things just did not work out for the young man within our program.”

Johnson would have had to graduate from GCCC in order to be eligible to play at Memphis or any Division I school, but Baumann recently told the Dayton Daily News he was “taking the right classes.”

• Somewhere along the line, with Jeremy Lin gone, Brogan Berry (Carroll) likely became the face of Harvard athletics.

Last Saturday she also became the first player in Ivy League basketball history, men’s or women’s, to reach 1,300 points and 500 assists, compiling eight and seven, respectively, in a win over Yale.

“It’s pretty hard to grasp at this point,” Berry told the school’s website. “I really can’t put into words how cool it is.”

With 1,361 career points and 503 assists, the senior point guard and co-captain ranks sixth all-time in women’s basketball scoring at Harvard and third in assists.

• In early January, when her East Central Community College (Decatur, Miss.) basketball team was 0-11, sophomore Ja’Monica Orton (Stebbins) told the Dayton Daily News it was only a matter of time before the situation improved.

Turns out she had a crystal ball.

ECCC is 8-2 since Orton made that statement, and 7-4 in conference play. In her final home game, Orton had 21 points and nine rebounds Monday in a loss to Copiah-Lincoln Community College that snapped a six-game winning streak.

• Ashley Christie (Alter) is averaging 7.8 points and 2.8 rebounds as a sophomore guard at Mount St. Mary’s in Baltimore, Md., and has started all but two of 55 games over two seasons.

• Katie Pleiman (Chaminade Julienne), Xavier’s top women’s tennis player, has won four consecutive singles matches, each in straight sets. Her efforts helped propel the Musketeers to a 2-0 start to the Atlantic 10 season.
