“No one had really pushed me,” Young said. “I wasn’t expecting him to beat me. The humble pie doesn’t taste very good.”
The last two weeks, Young has won both district and regional championships. He was first at the Troy regional last Friday in 49.57 seconds, while Peoples was second (49.64). They’re looking forward to another battle at the state meet this weekend in Columbus.
“I’m excited,” Peoples said. “I’m going to practice this week remembering that he beat me and I’m going to run twice as hard.
“We like the good competition,” Peoples said.
Return trip: West Liberty-Salem’s Hannah Ropp is back at the Division III state meet in the pole vault. She finished fourth at Troy with a leap of 10 feet, 8 inches.
She finished tied for seventh as a sophomore, but didn’t make it back last season.
“I didn’t realize how fortunate I was to make it my sophomore year,” Ropp said, “and how tough it is to get back. I’m going to go out there and have complete fun, and not worry about it at all.”
Live another day: Yellow Springs senior Mario Cosey missed a majority of the season with a lingering groin injury he suffered during soccer season.
Last week at Troy, Cosey qualified for the D-III 100 meters, finishing second in 11.17. It was just his fourth race of the season in the event.
“I feel so fortunate,” Cosey said. “I feel so lucky. I’m just happy to fight another day.”
Last season, Cosey finished fifth in the 100 at the D-III state meet.
Same lane: The Catholic Central 400 relay team of Casey Dillman, Danny LeMelle, Reed Buxton and Dimitrious Dimitroff advanced to Columbus by placing fourth in 44.04, while running in Lane 8.
On Friday, they’ll find themselves in Lane 8 again.
“We want to keep dropping time,” Dillman said.
