Waynesville down to 3 finalists for football coaching position

WAYNESVILLE — The search for a new head football coach at Waynesville High School has entered its final stages.

Waynesville has asked three candidates to return for another — and potential final — round of interviews this week.

The three final candidates are current Spartans offensive coordinator Brandon Philpot, Mt. Healthy High School offensive coordinator Chad Murphy and Hamilton High School running game coordinator and offensive line coach Nate Moore.

“It’s been a very good process,” Waynesville athletic director Tim Gabbard said. “The interviews have been great and there were a lot of high quality candidates. It was very hard to narrow it down.”

Philpot, a Kings High and Eastern Kentucky University graduate, has served as offensive coordinator under recently resigned head coach Glen Burchfield, guiding an explosive Spartan offense that reached the playoffs for three straight years.

Murphy, a Franklin High and Wilmington College graduate, is the current offensive coordinator at Mt. Healthy, a 2009 playoff participant, and was also the offensive coordinator at Monroe High during the Hornets’ state final four run in 2005.

Moore, a Mason High and University of Dayton graduate, is the current running game coordinator and offensive line coach at Hamilton High and also served in that same capacity at Chaminade Julienne in 2006 after being the offensive line coach for CJ in 2004-05.

“I think our committee has done a good job of screening the 44 applicants and finding three excellent candidates for this position,” Wayne Local School superintendent Patrick Dubbs said. “Some candidates removed themselves from consideration because there is no teaching position tied to the coaching job, and we appreciate that.

“People may think we can go out and create a position for a coach, but we can’t do that in our school system. We are committed to a five-year plan with our new levy, and we will stick to that. Either an internal candidate or an external candidate that works somewhere else and can drive to Waynesville High to coach football is what we’re looking for. That’s a really important part of this process that everyone needs to understand.”

The second round of interviews are scheduled for this week, with a final round possible later in the month. Waynesville plans to have a new coach named by the February Board of Education meeting.
