Knucklehead of the Week: Robert Nkemdiche

This week’s prestigious Knucklehead of the Week award, which I hand out weekly to a sports figure who needs a slap upside the head, goes to Robert Nkemdiche.

Nkemdiche is a defensive lineman who will get drafted by an NFL team next week. Maybe it’ll be the Carolina Panthers. I hope so, because Nkemdiche wants a panther. As a pet. He says they’re “like cats.” Yes, cats that might eat you if they feel like it.

The former Ole Miss defensive end, once thought to be a top-five pick in the draft, no longer is thought of so highly. He had a decent on-field career with the Rebels, but some of his other moves, such as falling out of a hotel window while reportedly high on synthetic marijuana, has hurt his draft standing. That’s saying something in the NFL.

Here’s hoping the Lions or Bears don’t draft Nkemdiche because I could see him wanting one of those real-life mascots. I’m guessing his future teammates won’t be hanging out at his condo.

Maybe the Arizona Cardinals will select Nkemdiche. A cool cardinal might make a nice, safe pet.

Honorable mention:

Andrew ShawThe Chicago Blackhawks forward went ballistic after drawing a penalty in Game 4 of his team's series against the Blues. Shaw went to the penalty box giving officials a double-barrel bird salute and then made a fool of himself by going on a profanity-laced tirade that included a homophobic slur. That's a no-no, of course, so Shaw was suspended for a game. He apologized and will undergo sensitivity training.

Troy Bacon — The Portland State football player is in trouble for impersonating a police officer. Bacon is being investigated after an incident in which he was yelling at a woman while he was driving his Dodge Charger. The exchange caught the attention of a real cop. Bacon showed him a badge that read "Junior Probation Officer," according to a story on OregonLive. He said he was off-duty, but his Charger was a rental.
