Darran Powell will be back as the Dunbar High School football coach. Powell confirmed on Friday that he had retained the position.
As of Monday, Powell’s coaching contract for the fall had not been approved by the Dayton school board. His return is not official until that happens
Powell was among multiple Dunbar coaches and DPS administrators who were involved in a series of Week 10 events in a regular-season finale against Belmont at Welcome Stadium last season.
A charge of deliberately trying to “throw a game” ultimately led to one of the harshest Ohio High School Athletic Association rulings in its history: a three-year probation for all Dayton Public Schools boys and girls athletic teams and $10,000 fine. “This is what I wanted,” Powell said. “I’m glad I’m back and we can get things moving forward. We’ve got a lot to prove next season.”
