Recruiting: Xenia’s Meechi Harris announces change of plans

One day before college football's new early signing period begins, Xenia receiver Meechi Harris announced he has rescinded a commitment to the Kentucky Wildcats.

Harris is the No. 20 player in Ohio per 247Sports' composite rankings. He had issued his UK commitment in October toward the end of a 2-8 season for the Buccaneers.

With new coach Trace Smitherman installing a triple-option offense at Xenia this season, Harris’ production declined. He caught 19 passes for 391 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown.

As a junior, Harris caught 41 passes for 663 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also had four return touchdowns — two on punts and two on kickoffs.

According to the athletics department, Harris still plans to sign a national letter of intent at the school at 12:45 on Wednesday afternoon, but the identity of his future college has not been made public as of yet.

He received nearly 20 offers last winter, spring and summer, including from Michigan State, Wisconsin, Iowa, West Virginia, Iowa State and Syracuse.

Most of the area’s highly regarded recruits have committed and plan to sign letters of intent Wednesday.

Trotwood-Madison running back Ra’veion Hargrove, Dunbar receiver Joseph Scates and Springfield athlete Leonard Taylor are notable exceptions as of this writing.

Like Harris, Fairfield offensive lineman Jackson Carman has not committed publicly but plans to sign Wednesday.

According to Fairfield athletics director Mark Harden, Carman will announce his decision and sign a letter of intent at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

His final three are Clemson, Ohio State and USC.

Hargrove told this news organization he will sign in February.

That appears to be the plan for Taylor, too.

After visiting Kentucky last weekend, Taylor has scheduled trips to Louisville, Pittsburgh and possibly Syracuse in January according to Springfield coach Maurice Douglass.
