Schoonmaker signs with WSU to play golf

Springboro High School senior Austin Schoonmaker will take his considerable golf game to Wright State University. Schoonmaker signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Raiders during the weeklong early signing period that ends on Wednesday.

Schoonmaker was a key player for Panthers teams that placed third in the Division I state championship at Ohio State University last month. He posted the lowest two-day total for Springboro, shooting 74-77-151. He also helped Springboro place fifth in the 2014 state tourney and sixth in ’13.

Schoonmaker was third in scoring among Greater Western Ohio Conference players, averaging 37.0 in 207 holes.

• The Centerville girls cross country team is a on a roll. The Elks followed up their second straight Division I state team championship by winning the girls Nike Cross Midwest Regional Championship at Terre Haute, Ind., this past weekend. The meet drew elite teams from Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio.

Running as the Centerville Rollers in the 5K race were Lainey Studebaker (18:32), Grace Kilroy (18:38), Taylor Malchow (18:40), Kelli Walsh (18:46), Savannah Lowe (18:51), Allison Fick (19:12) and Rachel Whitehead (19:29). Centerville beat a runner-up Michigan team by seven points.

The Rollers/Elks qualified for the 12th annual Nike Cross Nationals on Dec. 5 at Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland, Ore. Eight regional boys and girls champions and individuals qualify for that race.

• Former Carroll girls soccer coach Dan Hughes reminded us that the Patriots were state runners-up in both the 1995 and ’97 seasons when there was just one division of girls soccer. Also, both Carroll’s boys and girls advanced to regional play in 1997, like they did this season.

“I point this out not to detract from this year’s team great season but to remind everyone connected to the program of the rich history of Carroll girls soccer,” Hughes shared in an email. “GO PATRIOTS!”

• Dunbar grad Norris Cole is sponsoring a six-game Foundation preseason boys basketball showcase at Dunbar on Saturday. Trotwood-Madison will play Cincinnati Hughes in the 10 a.m. opener and Dunbar will meet Lima Senior in the 8:30 p.m. nightcap.

Other matchups are Centerville vs. Columbus south at noon, Piqua vs. Eaton at 2 p.m., Meadowdale vs. Alter at 4:30 p.m. and Northridge vs. Ponitz at 6:30 p.m.

Doors will open at 9 a.m. Tickets are $10.

The girls basketball season begins on Friday and the boys begin a week later on Nov. 27.

• Dylan Curtis (Centerville) and Lauren Heaton (Russia) were among 20 state finalists for Ohio’s Wendy’s High School Heisman. The program recognizes Ohio seniors who excel in the classroom and in athletics. Ohio winners were Vanessa Pasadyn (Brunswick) and Joseph Fornaro (West Geauga).
