Shawnee joins Springfield; Fairfield, Trotwood-Madison move up in high school football state polls

Springfield (6-1) improved to No. 7 and Springfield Shawnee (6-1) cracked the top 10 for the first time in the Associated Press high school football state polls that were released on Monday.

Springfield defeated previously unbeaten Springboro 23-0 in a Week 7 Greater Western Ohio Conference showdown last Friday. That knocked Springboro (6-1) out of the Division I state poll top 10 and vaulted Springfield up from No. 10.

Springfield, No. 3 in the D-I, Region 2 computer rankings, hosts Centerville (4-3) on Thursday.

Shawnee has not lost since falling in the season opener at Greenon. The Braves soared to No. 9 in the D-V state poll and host unbeaten London (7-0) in a Central Buckeye Conference showdown on Friday.

West Liberty-Salem (6-1), which lost 26-20 at Fairbanks, remained No. 10 in D-V. The Tigers host unbeaten West Jefferson (7-0) in an Ohio Heritage Conference matchup on Friday.

Unbeaten Fairfield (7-0) drew two first-place votes and moved up to No. 3 in D-I. Fairfield also is top ranked in the D-I, Region 4 computer rankings and secured a playoff spot with last week’s 37-13 defeat of Princeton. Fairfield defeated Springfield 16-12 in Week 2. Fairfield is at Sycamore (4-3) on Friday.

Trotwood-Madison (6-1) improved one spot to No. 5 in D-III and Chaminade Julienne (6-1) remained No. 10. Badin (4-3), which lost 17-3 at CJ, fell out of the D-III top 10.

Clinton-Massie (6-1) stayed at No. 4 in D-IV. Waynesville (6-1) improved two spots to No. 8 in D-IV and Valley View (5-2), which lost 23-20 to Franklin, fell out of the top 10.

Coldwater (7-0) and Marion Local (6-1) of the Midwest Athletic Conference retained their No. 1 positions in the Divisions VI and VII state polls. Coldwater tied D-I leader Mentor in receiving the most first-place votes (22). Also among the D-VI top 10 are No. 5 Anna (6-1) and No. 7 Minster of the MAC and No. 9 Mechanicsburg (6-1).

Marion Local had 18 first-place D-VII votes. Fort Loramie (6-1) was No. 6 and New Miami (6-0) No. 8.

Teams are voted on by state-wide media representatives who subscribe to the Associated Press. The Ohio High School Athletic Association football computer rankings will be released on Tuesday.
