Wildcats beat Xenia for third straight season

Five years after finishing 1-9, the Springfield Wildcats are four wins from a 10-0 season. They reached 6-0 for the first time since the new high school opened in 2008, routing Xenia 35-7 on Friday at Evans Stadium.

Springfield put the game away with three touchdowns in the second half. Raheim Moss threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Moses Douglass. Then Michael Brown-Stephens scored on a 16-yard run to push the lead to 29-7 in the third quarter. Jeff Tolliver scored on a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Xenia fell to 3-3 with its second loss in a row and third loss to Springfield in the last three seasons.

Springfield owned a 15-7 halftime lead thanks to some big plays and Xenia turnovers.

The Buccaneers ran nearly seven minutes off the clock on the game’s opening possession only to lose a fumble at the Springfield 29-yard line. The Wildcats took advantage and took a 6-0 lead on a 7-yard pass from Moss to Tavion Smoot with 1:22 remaining in the first quarter.

Springfield extended its advantage to 12-0 on its next possession, scoring on a 77-yard pass from Moss to Brown-Stephens. After a fumble by Xenia, Springfield kicked a 31-yard field goal to make it 15-0.

Xenia cut the deficit to 15-7 with a 1-yard run by Sincere Carry with 3:13 left in the first half.

Springfield beat Xenia 55-12 in 2017 and 40-18 in 2016. Prior to that, the teams hadn’t played since 2012, when Xenia won 21-20 in Springfield.
