What does Wayne graduate Marcus Freeman bring to Cincinnati coaching staff?

Among the first known additions to Luke Fickell’s new coaching staff at the University of Cincinnati is a face familiar to fans of Ohio State and Wayne High School: Marcus Freeman.

Fickell, who coached Freeman when he was a Buckeye linebacker from 2004-08, explained this week why he gave the 30-year-old a call.

“The understanding of what it takes to build a program,” Fickell said. “He’s had the good fortune to be able to move around and see some different ways of doing things.”

Freeman was a graduate assistant at Ohio State in 2010 then spent two seasons as an assistant at Kent State and four seasons at Purdue under Darrell Hazell, who is also a former Ohio State assistant.

“I think that’s a great opportunity to see him grow and then come back,” Fickell said. “Being here at one time and making sure we understand what the expectation level was is what we have to get through.”
