Wright State golfer Ryan Wenzler wins Horizon League tourney

Wright State junior Ryan Wenzler is headed to the NCAA Tournament.

Wenzler punched his ticket Sunday by winning medalist honors in the Horizon League Tournament at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

Wenzler, a Centerville High School graduate, carded a 5-under-par total of 211 (72-70-69) to finish two shots ahead of runner-up Joey Krecic of Cleveland State.

It’s the second straight tournament title for Wenzler and his third this season (NKU Collegiate Classic, Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational.). He becomes the first WSU player to win three tournaments in a year since two-time PGA Tour winner Frank Lickliter in 1989-90.

Cleveland State won its third straight team title. Wright State finished third.

Wenzler receives an automatic big into an NCAA Regional. The selection show is May 5 with regionals set for May 16-18 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Tucson, Ariz., Kohler, Wis., Albuquerue, N.M., Stillwater, Okla. and Nashville, Tenn.
