Residents spot funnel clouds over West Liberty, Urbana in Champaign County

UPDATE @ 11:27 p.m.: National Weather Service officials in Wilmington said they are not planning to send a survey team to Champaign County.


Residents reported seeing funnel clouds this evening over the West Liberty and Urbana areas.

Marty Ames, who lives in the West Liberty area, said he was looking outside shortly after 6 p.m. when he saw a strange cloud formation.

“It looked like a funnel cloud, it dropped down, it didn’t come down to the ground, but it was hovering in the air,” said Ames, who noted he did not notice any rotation. “I stood in my garage and watched it until it kind of dissipated and headed on farther north toward Bellefontaine.”

There was no touchdown reported, and no reports of damage in Champaign or Logan counties, according to sheriff’s dispatchers in both counties.

The funnel cloud was spotted during a Tornado Warning issued from 6:05 to 6:30 p.m. for Champaign and Logan counties.

According to the National Weather Service’s warning, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near West Liberty, moving northeast at 25 mph. northwestern Champaign County and central Logan County.
