High school basketball: Alter standout Conner makes college decision

Alter High School basketball standout Jacob Conner has made his college decision.

The Knights senior point guard will suit up for the Marshall Thundering Herd at the next level.

Conner is a 6-foot-9 point guard who averaged 10.5 points and 4.5 assists per game last season for the Knights, who went 15-8.

He also grabbed 9.5 rebounds per game and had 4.2 blocks and 2.2 steals while making 31.8 percent of his 3-pointers.

He was second in the GCL Coed in rebounds and led the league in assists and blocks.

Marshall is coached by Dan D’Antoni, a member of the school’s athletics hall of fame who runs a wide-open offense that caters to playmakers.

“The position I play in college will have a big impact on the decision I make because I think there are things I can do at one position that I may not be able to do at others,” Conner said in February. “My preference is to play the one, but I can play the three, too. Those are what I’m more comfortable with, and those are more of my natural positions.”

He also had offers from Wright State, Miami University, Ohio, Northern Kentucky, Toledo, Youngstown State, Mount St. Mary’s, Western Carolina, Winthrop, Stetson, Marshall, Robert Morris, Bryant and Santa Clara.

Conner won’t be the only high-profile local athlete headed to Huntington, W. Va., next season.

Football standouts Chase Harrison of Centerville and Adam Trick of Wayne are verbally committed to Marshall for the class of 2022.

Harrison is a quarterback while Trick plays defensive end and linebacker.

Last year, Marshall signed Wayne quarterback Cam Fancher as well.
