Report: Marvin Lewis wants contract extension from Bengals

The issue of whether or not Marvin Lewis will return to coach the Bengals in 2017 has already been settled.

He will be back to serve the final year of his contract this fall.

But what if it's not his last year as head coach in Cincinnati?

Lewis told the Cincinnati Enquirer at Senior Bowl practices in Mobile, Ala., he wants to have his contract extended, as it was last year in the spring.

Of course coaches under contract are fired all the time so such a move could be largely symbolic, but it will be interesting to see what the team does.

Letting him go into the year as a lame duck could send a message about the stakes they are putting on the season while extending him might signal to fans who are frustrated with the team's inability to win a playoff game this is not as much of a put-up-or-shut-up season as some might have assumed.
