Yost wants to highlight abuse findings

Ohio Auditor Dave Yost is using an accounting standard to shine a light on abusive spending by government officials on travel and entertainment and other items.

Yost, a Republican in his second term, said highlighting "findings of abuse" is already allowed under auditing rules but the tool hasn't been used by the state auditor's office in the past.

Abusive practices, such as staying in a $300-a-night hotel when a less expensive one is available next door, aren't always noted in management letters his office issues when it delivers roughly 3,800 audits each year.

Yost said he believes putting public officials on notice that such abuses will now be noted by auditors will serve as a deterrence.
