Costco sets opening date for new Centerville store

Cornerstone of Centerville project may create 2,800 jobs, developer says

The Dayton area’s first Costco Warehouse store will open to the public on Nov. 13, the store’s developer said this morning.

“They’re stocking the racks as we speak,” Oberer Companies CEO George Oberer Jr. said in an interview prior to providing an update to Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce members at a breakfast session this morning at the Dayton Racquet Club. A Costco spokeswoman said a ribbon-cutting is scheduled for 7:45 a.m. on Nov. 13.

Oberer is the developer of the 225-acre Cornerstone of Centerville multi-use project near the I-675/Wilmington Pike interchange, and Costco is the first tenant to build there. It is the national warehouse chain’s first Dayton-area store, and the sixth in Ohio, and Oberer said its presence is already proving to be a powerful magnet for other retailers.

When the project is fully built, Oberer projected that Cornerstone of Centerville will create 2,600 to 2,800 new jobs, generate annual sales of $170 million. Costco officials previously said they would hire about 185 employees for the new store, which also includes a gas station.

The entire Cornerstone project —to include retail, office and residential components — is expected to be built in multiple phases spanning 10 to 12 years. But the initial phases that focus on retail have attracted brisk interest, with some sections of the property essentially sold out, Oberer said. The developer said he could not yet name many of the other retailers that are coming because of confidentiality agreements, but expects some announcements to come in the next few months.

A handful of retailers have anounced they intend to build locations at or near Cornerstone. Phoenix-based Fresh Thyme Farmer Market, a specialty grocery store chain, is building across Feedwire Road from the development, while Dayton-based Milano’s Atlantic City Submarines has confirmed plans to open in Cornerstone. Kroger officials say they have been presented with plans for a location in the development and are considering it. A site map on Oberer’s web site shows a proposed Kroger store just east and adjacent to Costco.

After the special early ribbon-cutting event on opening day, Costco’s hours will be Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
