A look inside Dayton's M Concrete Studios

In 2005, a studio in Dayton began creating cutting-edge items with an ancient material: concrete.

M Concrete Studios, makers of unique, decorative concrete creations like bar tops, fireplaces, countertops, sinks, and more, are one of the industry's leaders in innovation. They've even earned recognition from trade publications like Concrete Network in the process.

You may have seen some of their handiwork around town at Wheat Penny Oven & Bar and Agnes and Orson Gifts and Goods.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit their studio, which you’ve probably seen yourself – it’s the “giraffe building” you pass on Steve Whalen Blvd.

I talked with Zack Mehaffie, one of the three owners-brothers behind this creative business.

So what's up with the giraffe?
Zack Mehaffie:
Ha! We just wanted to draw some attention to ourselves and randomly picked a giraffe.  We're planning on changing it up in the future, so keep an eye out.

What led you to open up shop in one of the Vulcan Tool Company buildings of Linden Heights?
Mehaffie:
My brothers and I grew up in this area and when we drove by, this place always seemed empty. So when we outgrew our location at the Davis-Linden Building, we looked into moving here.

What are your favorite projects to create?
Mehaffie:
Fireplaces and stand-alone items, like desks and tables.

What interested the three of you in concrete?
Mehaffie:
We grew up helping our father with his remodeling business, Mehaffie Design & Build, but we always preferred the jobs where we worked in concrete. Now that's all we do!

What surprised you the most about starting this business?
Mehaffie:
That most of our clients have been from Cincinnati, not Dayton. We have done tons of jobs in Cincinnati – bars, restaurants, offices, you name it. We'd love to do more work here in Dayton.

Not in the market for a large design? Check out their smaller Ohio plates as well as their concrete chairs, desks, tables, and more, which are all available for retail sale. In fact, some of their pieces are featured at Agnes & Orson on Brown Street.
