A safety consultant company must be knowledgeable about safety issues in a wide variety of work environments. Its primary responsibility is to inspect workplaces to ensure they comply with federal, state and local safety codes. Also, they design programs with worker safety in mind.
According to the NSC, about 11 American workers die on the job each day. In addition, about three million Americans are injured on the job each year.
Over the last year, more than 398,000 inquiries and more than a 100 complaints were filed with your BBB nationally about safety consultants.
Your BBB recommends a few tips for finding a reputable safety consultant.
• Consider a company’s reputation and years of service.
• Research the companies and check to see if they’re BBB Accredited.
• Shop around and get several quotes.
• Ask others who they’ve used and been happy with. If they’ve been happy with a company, most likely you’ll be too.
• Ask about consultant’s experience. For instance, do they have work experience in your industry?
• Be sure the consultant is properly insured and willingly produce certificates of insurance as evidence of this.
• Ask for references. A reputable company will be happy to provide you with a list of previous customers. Don’t be afraid to contact them.
• Determine the company’s safety management philosophy. A safety consultant should be able to prioritize risks.
• Look for credentials. Find out if the safety consultant is a member of a professional association like the National Association of Safety Professionals (NASP). The NASP offers continued training, education and certification.
• Do not deal with a consultant that tries to use scare tactics to get your business.
• Get a written contract, detailing everything agreed upon, including timelines and deliverables.
Remember, employers who show they care about the safety of its employees see improved morale, increased productivity and lower costs according to the NSC.
