Firehouse Subs donates life-saving equipment to 2 fire departments

The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation on Thursday donated equipment valued at more than $39,000 to two local fire departments.

The Kettering Fire Department and Fairborn Fire Department received chest compression systems worth $39,444, Firehouse Subs officials said in a release. The devices deliver uninterrupted chest compressions at a constant rate and depth to patients in cardiac arrest, boosting the patients’ chance of survival.

Charles Fryman, the area developer for Firehouse Subs, said the foundation has donated more than $80,000 in life-saving equipment to fire departments in the Dayton area since the sandwich chain entered the southest Ohio market more than three years ago.

Firehouse Subs operates restaurants in Oakwood, Kettering and Huber Heights, and is looking to add locations in the Dayton-Springfield region in the near future, Fryman said.

Firehouse Subs created the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation in 2005 with the mission of providing funding, life-saving equipment, and educational opportunities to first-responders and public safety organizations. The non-profit has given $15 million to departments in 44 states, including more than $698,000 in Ohio, Firehouse Subs officials said.

To help raise funds for the foundation, each restaurant recycles leftover, five-gallon pickle buckets and sells them to guests for $2. Donation canisters on register counters collect spare change, and the restaurants have a “Round-Up” program that invites diners to round up their bill to the nearest dollar, with all proceeds benefiting the foundation.
