New wine bar opens in the Oregon District

Deaf Monty’s Wine, 2 other businesses, plan July 14 grand opening.

DAYTON — Deaf Monty’s Wine, a new wine bar and retail shop, has opened at 22 Brown St. in the Oregon Historic District.

The wine bar is owned by Leslie and Jeff Gonya, who also own the Inn Port D’Vino bed-and-breakfast at the same address. Gonya said she and her husband have wanted to open a small wine bar to complement the theme of the B&B, which has rooms named for Champagne, Oporto and Friuli.

The wine bar was a long time coming: The Gonyas initially applied for a license to serve alcohol in August 2009, and were denied by the state in part because Dayton City Commission objected to it, citing residents’ desire to limit the number of liquor licenses in the neighborhood. The Gonyas appealed in Franklin County Common Pleas Court and lost. Earlier this year, however, the Oregon Historic District association voted to abolish a cap on liquor licenses, and the Gonyas were able to obtain one.

Leslie Gonya said she is planning a grand opening for the wine bar and shop from 4 to 8 p.m. on July 14, when two other new Oregon District businesses — District Antiques at 122 Van Buren St. and Envision-Works, 510 E. Fifth St. — are also holding grand openings.

The wine bar will be open 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, offering a rotating selection of eight to 10 wines available in 3-ounce or 6-ounce pours. Light-fare food will also be available. For more information, call (937) 225-9463.
