Nonprofit commits to Wright Dunbar district

A money-management provider that serves people with mental illness and developmental disabilities is moving into a new home in Dayton.

PayCo, a Columbus-based nonprofit, has purchased the former post office at 8-10 N. Williams St. in the Wright Dunbar Business District. It plans to spend about $200,000 to restore the building, add offices and create a conference room.

Last summer, PayCo opened an office at 13 N. Williams St.

The group had planned to expand and become a permanent part of the community, according to a release from Wright Dunbar Inc. The project is expected to take about nine months to complete and create five jobs.

PayCo currently is leasing a 685-square-foot space from Wright Dunbar, but its permanent home has about 3,296 square feet of available space, said Erica Hubler, Wright Dunbar business manager.

PayCo hopes to move into its permanent office in the business district in about a year, said Brittany McCoy, the group’s director of operations.

The post office is centrally located, the Dayton area has a significant need for an organizational payee and the Wright Dunbar district is “an absolutely beautiful area with deep historical roots,” she said.

PayCo helps manage the incomes of people who receive Social Security payments related to mental health and developmental issues. Staff ensures that its clients’ bills are paid on time and helps them craft a budget, according to PayCo.

“Our point of being is to assist individuals pay their rent and bills in a situation where they may not be able to independently,” McCoy said.

The nonprofit serves more than 1,300 people and said it is the largest payee program of its kind in Ohio. The group is regulated and audited by the Social Security Administration.
