Ohio’s top 5 job sectors (manufacturing is No. 5)

Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 36 states and the District of Columbia in February, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report released Friday.

Year-over-year, Ohio has added 78,700 jobs since February 2015. The number of employed people in the state is at 5,477,700.

Leading the way in the Buckeye State are jobs in trade, transportation and utilities, which account for just more than 1 million jobs, according to BLS seasonally-adjusted data.

Education and health services was next with 920,900 jobs.

Professional and business services is the No. 2 employment segment in the state with 711,600 jobs. Government jobs account for 770,300 jobs, just ahead of manufacturing, 690,600 jobs.

Five more things to know about the report:

1. The country’s unemployment rate is 4.9 percent.

2. California led the way last month, adding 39,900 jobs in February. Percentage-wise, Hawaii and New Hampshire each increased the number of those employed by 0.7 percent.

3. New Jersey took the biggest hit, losing 8,600 jobs. Percentage-wise, North Dakota had the biggest decline at 1 percent.

4. New Hampshire and South Dakota had the lowest jobless rates last month, at 2.7 percent.

5. Among nine geographic divisions, the West North Central area had the lowest unemployment rate in February: 3.7 percent. That region includes Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.
