Shoppers plan to spend $805 this holiday season on gifts, up $3 from last year, with the total amount spent projected to be $630.5 billion, according to the National Retail Federation.
With all that money up for grabs, and many people looking for the best deals, many retailers released their Black Friday deals early this year, and some, including Target and Best Buy, started their sales early or held a preview event for shoppers who couldn’t wait around for the day after Thanksgiving.
“I’m really enjoying just kind of taking my time getting little breaks out with my girls to go shopping when it’s not so crazy,” said Springfield mother of two, Julianne LeMaster.
Nearly 57 percent of consumers started their holiday shopping in early November, up from 49 percent in 2008, according to the National Retail Federation.
Retailers have taken notice, and some are trying to grab those go-getters, with early deals.
For the first time this year, Target offered a two-day Black Friday preview, and for one day customers could purchase some of the items ahead of time.
“It generated a lot of buzz and people got excited about the holiday coming up,” said Evelyn Dekoninck, store team leader at the Dayton Mall Target.
Plus, Target continues to offer Black Friday-like discounts through it’s free Cartwheel app.
Best Buy is also jumping ahead with Black Friday deals.
“Lots of 4K TV’s on sale, as good or better pricing than what’s in our Black Friday ad. We’ve got a lot of great promos in our appliance department, where the Black Friday savings started at the beginning of November,” said Stuart Bidinger, general manager of the Best Buy in Dayton.
The move to early discounts is a matter of convenience, according to Bidinger.
“Not everyone wants to be out on Black Friday. We want to make sure they can get some great deals today,” said Bidinger.
More retailers rolled out early Black Friday discounts this past weekend.
Today, Toys-R-Us unveiled early access to dozens of door busters, and on Saturday, Kmart began offering Black Friday door busters online.
