May is National Bike Month. Also, this week is National Bike To Work Week (May 11-15). Whether you ride your bike for your health, to save money or to help the environment, bicycling offers many benefits. If you’re one looking to get fit and hop on a bike, your Better Business Bureau offers help for finding a reputable bicycle shop.

Over the last year, your BBB recorded more than 46,000 inquiries and almost 200 complaints about bicycle shops nationally. Locally, your BBB received about 550 inquiries were filed with your BBB about bicycle shops.

When searching for a bicycle shop, your BBB recommends these tips:

• Get recommendations from friends and family.

• Ask for references. A reputable bike shop will be happy to provide you with a list of previous customers. Don’t be afraid to contact those references.

• Consider reputation, years of service and services provided, as well as cost.

• Determine your budget. Make sure you have an idea of what you’re willing to spend and stick to it.

• Look for a good bike mechanic. Many people will frequent a bike shop because of a great bike mechanic.

• Look at the bike shop’s maintenance area. An unkempt and disorganized area could be associated with shoddy work.

• Find out if the bike shop is a member of an association like the National Bicycle Dealers Association. A company belonging to such an organization shows commitment to professionalism.

• Make sure the bike facility is convenient to get from work or home.

• Be sure the employees are knowledgeable and helpful.

• Ask if the bike shop offers a final mechanical inspection before taking the bike home.

• Get a written contract, detailing the work to be completed including verbal promises, warranties and guarantees. Don’t sign anything until all blanks are completed.

Remember, make sure you go through the fitting process. Bikes come in all shapes and sizes. Using a bicycle that is too small or too large can make for an uncomfortable experience. Don’t forget to try out the bike. Take it for a spin to see if you’re comfortable on it.
