John Landsiedel stays busy with works at multiple venues

When it comes to concurrent solo exhibits, John Landsiedel has an embarrassment of riches right now. He is showing a grand total of 78 artworks in various media in four separate locations.

These works are available for viewing and purchase through Dec. 31.

“I’ve been networking to get my art out there. Due to the limited number of art galleries in Dayton, artists must always look for alternative exhibit venues,” said Landsiedel, who lives in an 1850 homestead in north Dayton. “I am constantly looking for walls suitable for art.”

1. Two Faced

Takes place at the Vandalia Municipal building, 245 James Bohanan Drive. The 25 photo collages in vintage frames range in size from 20 by 20 to 40 by 40 inches and cost $65 to $400. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5.m. Monday through Friday. One work shows a juxtaposition of Audrey Hepburn: one side a painting, and the other side a photo. Another is an unlikely pairing of Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Andy Warhol. The pop artist made the former first lady the subject of a series of works after JFK’s assassination.

“The face is the most revealing part of all of us. The faces reveal ancestry, age, and emotion. They are unique, beautiful, and none created equal,” said Landsiedel, whose studio is in a three-story barn.

2. A Piece of Me

Presented at Jay’s Seafood Restaurant from 5 to 9:30 p.m. daily, 225 E. Sixth St., Dayton. Test board artworks he made over the years prior to paintings on canvas highlighting color, space and shapes that are cut into vintage frames with glass. These 20 non-objective abstracts feature bold strokes of color, and range from 15 by 15 inches to 30 by 40, and are priced under $200.

3. Black

Shown in Jay’s Kitchen Door Wine Room, these 18 media/wood assemblages are constructed from found objects from the streets of Dayton. The assemblages range in size from 15 by 15 inches to 40 by 40 inches. He has repurposed chairs, railings, windows, doors, bedposts that were saved and assembled over the last 35 years.

“I met Louise Nevelson, a sculptor on the streets of New York City in 1980. I was inspired by the way she worked with found objects in her art,” said Landsiedel.

4. Matter Paintings

These 15 works are presented in the Hotel Gallery, 108 E. Main St. in Tipp City. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The paintings range in size from 20 by 20 inches to 40 by 60, and are priced from $95 to $600. The works were created with a limited palette, and most are embellished by their presentation in vintage door/window frames.

“Matter is a word coined for artwork that occupies space and possess mass, with importance and significance,” said Landsiedel.
