MIDDLETOWN — Churches traditionally raise the spirits of local residents, but next weekend, Christ United Methodist Church will do so in a different sort of way.

On Saturday, Aug, 22, the church will host comedian Carl Hurley for a night of good, clean fun.

“Middletown has so much down stuff going on lately. Laughter is good for the soul. Why have things be so doom and gloom?” said Mary Sue Hounshell, the director of the church’s women’s group.

Hounshell discovered Hurley when tapes of his were played on a bus tour she took. She said Hurley was a professor at Eastern Kentucky University who “discovered he had a knack for telling stories about being raised in Kentucky.”

According to information provided by the church, Hurley makes 150 appearances yearly, ranging from stand-up comedy routines, to being a keynote speaker at conventions, to presenting seminars and workshops on a variety of subjects. The best compliment he can receive is when someone tells him, “That was real funny and there was a good message there also.”

The event is called “A Country Evening” because the church will have a “country store” featuring baked goods, home canned goods and homemade ice cream. The store will be open from 6 to 6:45 p.m. the evening of the show.

Admission is $15 for adults and $12 for children ages 4 to 12. Nursery care will be provided for those 3 and younger. Tickets may be purchased from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays at Christ United Methodist Church, 700 S. Marshall Road, or the night of the performance. Doors open at 6 p.m.; the show starts at 7 p.m.
