“This announcement makes the Burger King brand the first legacy, fast-food hamburger restaurant chain to enable digital coupons and offers on a national basis,” he said in an emailed response to questions.
Customers will be able to download the app from Google Play and Apple iTunes stores beginning in April.
The app being heavily pushed to millennial diners aged 18 to 35 years old will provide “market specific and personalized offers to each registrant” and “drive purchases tailored to buying habits — including product preferences, times of visit and favorite locations,” the statement Thornton provided says.
Fast-food chain restaurants are jumping feet first into the mobile arena.
McDonald's USA has an mobile app that helps users locate restaurants, read nutrition info, check employment opportunities and receive promotions.
Dunkin' Donuts has an app that offers "easy payments, exclusive mobile offers, DD Card gifting, a Dunkin' store locator."
The Burger King app will work in the following away, according to Thornton:
- When the app is registered, the guest gets an automatic "virtual card." Guests can load value onto the "virtual card," or link physical cards with the app. This is found in the section called "Wallet."
- The guest clicks "Pay with BK Crown Card" directly from the wallet if payment is the only action. If the guest has redeemed a coupon, they are prompted if they would like to pay digitally. They click directly through.
- The app generates a unique 4-digit code, whether taking one action or two.
- The Burger King restaurant cashier enters the 4-digit code, which is validated in real-time.
- The restaurant point of sale processes payment from the BK Crown Card, and payment is immediately deducted from the card balance.
- Feedback is given to the guest immediately, reflecting the new balance.
