RESTAURANT WEEK EXPERIENCES
Our food and dining team will share Restaurant Week dining experiences throughout the week. Visit MyDaytonDailyNews.com throughout the week.
The place: Jay's Seafood Restaurant is one of the must-see historic places to dine in Dayton. The building dates back to 1862, when it was a grist mill. Inside is a 32-foot mahogany bar, which adds to the plush and historic atmosphere. The restaurant has an upscale feel with a casual dress code. The tables are spaced far enough apart to respect conversations. The acoustics are good — even when the restaurant is full of diners. You can easily hear your dining companions. Soft lighting adds to the relaxed ambiance.
Fish is flown in four times a week from places like Boston and Florida. Jay’s is also known for its impressive award-winning wine list.
Restaurant Week menu ($25.13 per person):
- First course: Shrimp gazpacho or roasted strawberry salad with mixed greens, ginger vinaigrette, goat cheese and almonds.
- Second course: Grilled, marinated bone-in pork chop and jalapeno-cheddar cornbread with apricot-cherry chutney or grilled Mahi Mahi, Latin potato salad with lime, cilantro, red onion, garlic, extra-virgin olive oil and crema fresca.
- Third course: Pecan pie or peach cobbler.
What we thought: Here we are in the second half of summer, and Jay's Restaurant Week menu reminds us that autumn is just around the corner. Flavors range from summer's ripe peaches, strawberries and tomatoes to heartier foods, like pork chops with spiced chutney and pecans from the last harvest.
If you’re looking for a lighter meal, we recommend the shrimp gazpacho, the Mahi Mahi and the peach cobbler combination. If you’re in the mood for a heavier meal, ask for the salad, pork chops and pecan pie.
Sandy’s favorite part of the meal was the roasted strawberry salad: “It has flavors that you don’t taste every day. I love the shaved almonds, and that goat cheese and ginger vinaigrette dressing are refreshing.”
Connie’s favorite part of the meal was the slightly chilled shrimp gazpacho soup: “It’s delicious and citrusy. I love how the red onions are finely diced and give the soup some crispness, and the Serrano peppers give it a little kick. Plus, two large cocktail shrimp are perched on the side of the bowl.”
Restaurant Week is a great time to discover new dining experiences at affordable prices. Participating restaurants set their three-course meals for $20.13, $25.13 or $30.13 per person.
