She didn’t know it during that fateful first meeting nearly a decade ago, but Jamie Suttle was destined to make sweet music with the rocker on stage.
That musical meet-cute about a boy with a red guitar and ripped jeans — her now husband Chris, a guitarist, songwriter and the audio engineer behind Dayton’s In the Red Studio — is chronicled in “Burn Like Whiskey,” one of the smoking country rockers from Jamie’s new CD, “This Is My Story.”
The Suttles are performing with bandmates Jamie Preston (keyboards), Nathan Warden (bass) and Aaron Farrier (drums, percussion) at Peach’s Grill in Yellow Spring on Friday.
The twosome recently sat down for a session of she said-he said.
She said: “I’ve worked with bands in the past, and, of course, Chris has worked with many bands, too. Since we got married and decided to start a family we wanted to try to do something together. It seemed convenient, and we started writing together a few years ago, and it really clicked. It’s been nonstop ever since.”
He said: “It’s very different working with someone you’re married to, but it’s also really great. Jamie’s very talented. She’s probably one of the best, if not the best, songwriter I’ve ever worked with.”
She said: “Make sure you got that.”
He said: “We didn’t set out to make a cookie-cutter country album.”
She said: “We just wanted to make good songs.”
He said: “Instead of trying to mold to a particular style, we decided to let our influences take over and see what happens. We did a lot of it just playing together live to try to get that vibe. Then we did minimal overdubs, and it sounded like a band.”
She said: “We’ve met all of these musicians at church, in our circle of friends and all these different projects at the studio. I feel very lucky and very grateful that everything fell into place for this project.”
He said: “The people in the band are our friends, and everybody is laidback, so it was a lot of fun. There were no egos, and it was really cool to see everybody add their touch.”
She said: “Our daughter is 1 now, and I was pregnant when we first started the project. There were big gaps when we didn’t work on things. We love performing with our friends, so we’re really excited to be out playing shows again. I’m in awe of the musicians I work with and the response we’re getting from people. The whole experience has been overwhelming.”
