MIDDLETOWN — Musicians Doc Watson and David Holt are kicking off Miami University Middletown’s Artist and Lecture Series for the 2010-11 year with a little bit of everything.

“Doc is really a combination of folk, bluegrass, blues and gospel,” said Dr. Howard Epstein, regional coordinator of the artistic series. “David is more old-time folk.”

Epstein has seen Watson many times and enjoyed his music so much he invited him to visit the Hamilton campus a few years ago. He wanted someone with a distinguished career to entertain the students, faculty and locals this academic year.

Watson made his name as a folk artist and is an eight-time Grammy winner. He has been in the music business for more than 50 years.

Epstein says he taken the way to play acoustic guitar to a whole other level.

“Doc likes to tell stories,” said Epstein. “All people love Doc.”

Holt, a storyteller himself, plays six different instruments, some of which that may look foreign to most spectators. He has played with Watson a number of times throughout his career.

Audiences will see two different sets during the show.

One includes Watson and Holt, and the other includes Holt and his grandson, Richard.

The show is for all ages, and part of the money collected from the concert will support future programs at Miami University.
