NEEDMORE: L.A. rockers with local ties return to town

How to go

Former Daytonian Garret McArthur brings his Los Angeles-based band NEEDMORE to W.O. Wright’s on Friday, April 9. He answered some questions last week about the band’s origins and what the future holds.

Q: What prompted the move to Los Angeles in late 2006, and where do you think the band would be today if you'd stayed in Columbus?

A: As neophytes in music, new bands can fall subject to a hometown lifestyle. Our fear of remaining stagnant pushed us to sacrifice everything and move 2,275 miles west. Relocating ultimately obligated us to make the most out of music.

Q: How did the group end up with Del-Fi Music Group?

A: Through hard work and determination. In L.A., we held meager jobs to pay rent while rehearsing every day. We would walk 5 miles to a bakery with Wi-Fi, to find gigs for the band. After rigorous gigging and building a fan base, we performed at a major-label showcase in Hollywood. Following the sold-out show, the president of DMG, Tom Keane, held private sessions. In late 2007, we signed a record deal.

Q: NEEDMORE was recently named #1 Alternative Rock Band by MTV and AOL Music's Ourstage competition. How did that impact the band?

A: It impacted us very positively. Receiving accolades is refreshing, and can aid in bolstering our measure of success as a band.

Q: What's it like hearing your song in a feature film?

A: Hearing one's own music in a popular film, TV show, or soundtrack is surreal, yet feels very natural ... as if it was meant to be there.

Q: NEEDMORE was the number one booked act (that didn't showcase) at the 2009 N.A.C.A. National Convention. Why do you think your music clicks with that demographic?

A: We're cognizant of our writing methods. Our music actually resonates with many different demographics because it's eclectic, dynamic, and original, yet has a sense of familiarity.

Q: What can folks expect when NEEDMORE performs at W.O. Wright's?

A: The NEEDMORE live show is extremely dynamic. It's filled with emotion, energy, and quiet breaths of fresh air. It's not only musically solid, but also visually stimulating.

Q: What's the summer looking like for NEEDMORE?

A: Busy, ha-ha. It's looking as if we'll tour with Goo Goo Dolls, while pushing our new single to national radio. We'll also write for a new record, as well as entertain offers from major record labels.

Q: Any final thoughts?

A: Give your time to what you love; for that's all you have in life.
