DAYTON — Some of the best young musicians and singers in the Miami Valley will have the spotlight during two seasonal concerts today, Sunday, Dec. 5.

The Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will present its its winter concert at 3 p.m. at the Schuster Performing Arts Center.

A few hours later, the esteemed Bach Society of Dayton will share its annual holiday concert with a select chorale from the Kettering Children’s Choir. The Kettering Adventist Ringers bell choir also will perform during the 7:30 p.m. program at the Kettering Adventist Church.

The Youth Philharmonic, made up of students in grades nine through 12 from across the area, will perform 20th century Mexican composer Jose Pablo Moncayo’s plucky and dancing “Huapango,” Samuel Barber’s eight-minute masterpiece “Adagio for Strings” and Antonin Dvorak’s buoyant Symphony No. 8 in G major, op. 88.

Patrick Reynolds, who will conduct the DPYO, said the three works add up to “a brilliant showcase for these talented young musicians.”

One of them, principal cellist Josh Halpern, said many of the musicians are “really jazzed” about getting to play the Barber work.

Truth be told, he’s most excited about the Dvorak, which while not as well known as the composer’s New World Symphony (No. 9) “is no less great. It’s the focus of the program.”

A junior at Oakwood High School, Halpern, 17, is just starting “the college search.” But he already knows he wants to make a career in music.

The Bach Society of Dayton is directed by John Neely, children’s chorale director is Bruce Swank and Joan Ulloth Dorgan conducts the Advent Ringers.

The program will include Christmas favorites and Hanukkah music. WDPR, 88.1 FM. and WDPR, 89.9 FM, will broadcast a recording of the concert at 10 a.m. on Christmas Day.
