LOVELAND — The Naked Karate Girls do not perform nude, nor are they skilled in martial arts. In fact, they’re not even female.
However, the Naked Karate Girls is a zany Cincinnati-based band that will be at the Red Rock Tavern June 17. This will be the band’s first appearance at the tavern this month, and the Naked Karate Girls will play at Red Rock one Thursday each month, said Barry Rogers, the general manager of Red Rock.
The group came up with its name because they read that the words “naked,” “karate” and “girls” were the three words that were searched most on Google —though not necessarily in that order —said Jimmy King, a member of the group.
“It sounds like fun, and that would prompt people to say ‘What is that?’ ” said King, who goes by the name “Ponch” — and yes, that’s Ponch as in Erik Estrada’s character from the 1970s television show “Chips.”
Of the band’s stage show, King said, “It’s a lot of fun. It’s very interactive. ... We have these old-style telephones on the stage and we wear our own fake mustaches.”
And the antics don’t stop there. The Naked Karate Girls has been known to attach rolls of toilet paper to blower motors, flinging the tissue out into the crowds.
Rogers said, “They’re a good party band. They play things like AC/DC but with kind of a dance beat to it. They use dry ice and funny costumes and they have about 40 or 50 girls. They throw a party. They’re probably the most fun party band out of Cincinnati.”
The band’s repertoire includes everyone from KC and the Sunshine Band to Night Ranger to the Righteous Brothers. They will also play the After Hours on the Squre in West Chester Aug, 19.
