10 top events this week

1. ALEFEST

Craft beer consumption is on the rise like never before. While beer sales overall were down 1 percent in 2011, the craft beer market grew 13 percent by volume and 15 percent by retail dollars during the same period according to the Brewers Association.

Much of that growth is attributed to beer aficionados like Daytonian Joe Waizmann sharing their knowledge through events like Dayton Beer Week. The citywide celebration closes Saturday, Aug. 25 with the 14th annual AleFest at Carillon Historical Park, 1000 Carillon Blvd., in Dayton from 2 to 5 p.m.

If you’ve ever been curious about craft beers but didn’t know where to start, AleFest is the perfect introduction. More than 350 beers from more than 150 international craft breweries will be on tap that day by big name companies and rising brands such as Great Lakes, Thirsty Dog and Goose Island.

Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 the day of the event. Admission includes 20 beer samples, a sampling guide and a commemorative tasting glass. Call (937) 623-2337 or visit www.alefest.com.
