Bret Michaels, former lead singer of glam metal band Poison, is performing at Indian Creek Tavern on Aug. 10.

Poison sold 15 million albums in the U.S. and charted six Top 10 singles during the 1980s and 1990s. But Michaels has come a long way from songs such as “Talk Dirty to Me.”

Like many victims of the grunge revolution, Michaels laid low for a few years before re-emerging as a solo artist, actor, filmmaker and reality-show star.

During the 2000s, while occasionally reuniting with Poison to release a new album or tour with other bands from the glam metal era, Michaels starred in VH1’s “Rock of Love With Bret Michaels,” where women competed to go on a date with Michaels. More significantly, he was a contestant twice on “The Celebrity Apprentice,” raising money for the American Diabetes Association. (He won the competition the first time around, but was the first one fired the second).

Michaels suffered from juvenile diabetes as a child, and the condition also threatened his daughter, Raine. He also sponsors a camp for diabetic children.

Michaels’s latest solo album is “Jammin’ With Friends,” released in June. The album is a mixture of covers, rarities and renditions of Poison songs performed with guest artists such as rapper Lil Jon, Ace Frehley, Def Leppard’s Phil Collen, Jimmy Buffett, Aerosmith’s Joe Perry, Loretta Lynn and Miley Cyrus.
