Rascal Flatts’ Jay DeMarcus on state honor controversy

Rascal Flatts’ guitarist on state recognition: honored, but “I think there are bigger fish to fry on the floor of the Senate.”

Rascal Flatts will not be Ohio’s official country band, but one senator is pushing to give the band its very own day at least.

Sen. Jim Hughes, R-Columbus, has amended his bill to give the band a day instead of being the state’s offician country band because several other popular country acts — Roy Rogers, Dwight Yoakam, Johnny Paycheck and Roy Rogers — also hail from the Buckeye State.

The proposed law now would designate June 6 as “Rascal Flatts Day” throughout the land.

The bill is expected to soon be up for a vote on the senate floor.

Rascal Flatts’ lead vocalist Gary LeVox and bass guitarist, keyboard player and backing vocalist Jay DeMarcus are from Columbus, where the band got its start.

K99.1 FM Breakfast Club co-hosts Nancy Wilson and Fry Guy spoke with DeMarcus yesterday, May 15, about what has proven a controversial bill.

DeMarcus said he was very honored by the bill, but slipped in a little joke.

“I think there are bigger fish to fry on the floor of the Senate,” he said.

Hughes laid out his reasoning for recognizing Rascal Flatts in a January testimony before the Senate State Government, Oversight and Reform Committee. “It sounds pretty good to me.”

“They have always been a group that has remained loyal to their roots and have showed their allegiance to State of Ohio in many ways. Committed to giving back, they are known for their charitable work and have even performed for charities in Ohio,” Hughes testified. “As fellow Buckeyes, I believe they are God fearing, hardworking, honest men whom positively represent our State and all.”

Rascal Flatts, a band known for a string of hits that includes “I’m Movin’ On,” “Skin,” “Praying for Daylight,” “I Melt” and Bless the Broken Road,” is promoting its Rewind Tour.

The tour will be at Indianapolis’ Klipsch Music Center Saturday, May 17; Cleveland’s Blossom Music Center on Aug. 1 and Cincinnati’s Riverbend Music Center Sept. 5.

K99 recently just wrapped up its Rascal Flatts “Rewind” throwback photo contest. One winner and a guest will be sent to the 2014 CMA Fest in Nashville for a private Rascal Flatts acoustic event.
