The audience included Cox employees and 10 K99.1FM contest winners and their guests.
Contest winner Stephanie Walker of Centerville said she was thrilled to see Crow, who wore a pair of cowboy boots and a simple day dress.
The singer spoke several times about her affinity for country music and its fans.
“I had a lot of people say, ‘will you please consider making a county album,’” Crow said. “Now I am doing it.”
Walker attended the event with her husband Scott. She said Crow seems like “a real person.”
“Her music is so good,” Walker said. She later noted that she doesn’t mind if Crow goes a little country, but she won’t want “full on.” Scott Walker disagreed, saying Crow could bring the country on full.
The singer gave fans a little country and little rock and roll during her performance.
Accompanied by her longtime guitarist Peter Stroud, Crow sang the backyard drinking song “Easy” and “Waterproof Mascara,” a tune about a struggling mother Crow wrote for Brad Paisley. It includes the lyrics, “It won’t run like his daddy did.”
Crow performed fan favorites such as “Strong Enough” and “If it Makes You Happy.” She joked that she was distracted by an audience member’s iPad screen when she missed a lyric in the song “Picture.”
Friday's performance was part of the K99.1FM Unplugged series that sees up-and-coming country artist preform at the radio station. Like WHIO and the Dayton Daily News, K99.1 is owned by Cox Media Group Ohio.
Crow, her children and staff are on a promotional tour of country radio stations. She said promoting her upcoming album in that fashion is the first thing that seemed organic in years.
This won't be Crow's only stop this year in the Dayton area. She will preform a 7:30 p.m. concert June 15 at Fraze Pavilion, 695 Lincoln Park Blvd. in Kettering.
The concert marks the 10th anniversary of the making of Sheryl Crow’s rockin’ “C’mon America 2003” DVD.
